When the Book of Chronicles was written, Jesus had not been born. Seeking the “face” of God could not be so literal as to gaze at Christ as we might do at Michealangelo’s Last Supper or the orthodox icon, Jesus the Teacher. Instead, it meant to really seek God head-on with a willingness to encounter and be transformed by the grace and power of God.
Scripture tells us that a desire to seek the face of the divine comes with it willingness, curiosity, gratitude, and vulnerability. These are traits we sometimes forget in the material world of the here-and-now.
Thankfully, Christmas is upon us. We believers get to marvel at the birth of God-with-us, Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14), and share good tidings to the world around us.
The birth of Christ is the joyful reminder that “seeking the face of God” is an aim worth striving toward.
It is my hope and prayer that as you encounter the festival birth of Christ, it sparks within all of us that same desire it did for those blessed few who had the joys of gazing upon the face of a baby two thousand years ago.
I hope you, your family, your friends, and your neighbors will join our constellation community for Christmas services to celebrate the birth of Christ.
Brendan, Charlie, and I wish you and yours: A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The grace of Jesus Christ be with you,
